Turkish designer Melek Zeynep Bulut has captivated audiences at the 2024 London Design Festival with her innovative installation, Duo. Displayed from 14th to 22nd September at the iconic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the suspended structure merges art, design, and sensory perception to create an immersive experience.
The Concept Behind Duo at its core
Duo is a portal—a suspended rectangular form that transitions into an open archway. Its meticulously designed components hover in equilibrium, inviting visitors to pass through and engage with the space. Explaining her vision, Bulut states: “Essentially, Duo is a portal, and all my works are portals, offering spaces for dimensional transition and equilibrium. Imagine it like our body—not a solid mass, but a sensor that perceives, responds, and interacts with stimuli.”
This unique approach transforms Duo into more than an installation. It becomes a metaphorical and physical exploration of how spaces, like the human body, can react and adapt to their surroundings.
A Fusion of Art and Sensory Perception
Drawing inspiration from the sensory receptors in the human body, Bulut conceptualises space as a “mechanical body.” Just as our bodies process textures, heat, and sounds, Duo seeks to evoke responses from its audience through its suspended components and spatial design. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the installation, perceiving its textures and experiencing its dynamic interplay of light, form, and movement.
