Renowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has brought his iconic arch sculpture, World Without Borders, to Stockholm. This monumental 40-foot steel structure, depicting intertwined human outlines, now stands outside the Nationalmuseum gallery as a powerful symbol of unity and the free movement of people.
A Global Statement on Borderless Humanity
First unveiled in New York City under the historic Washington Square Arch in 2017, Ai Weiwei’s sculpture was initially funded by a Kickstarter campaign titled Good Fences Make Good Neighbours. Its debut aimed to spark conversations about tightening borders, particularly the US-Mexico divide. Now, the installation has found a new temporary home in Sweden, continuing its mission of advocating for a borderless world.
The arch, constructed from polished steel bars, features an intricate cut-out of two overlapping human figures at its base. This evocative imagery highlights themes of connection, unity, and the universal human desire for freedom and belonging.
Collaboration with Brilliant Minds Foundation
In Stockholm, the installation is supported by Spotify founder Daniel Ek’s Brilliant Minds foundation. The foundation describes the sculpture as a call for the “free passage of all populations” and a vision for a “world without borders.” After its one-year display outside the Nationalmuseum, the structure will move to a permanent site within the city, yet to be disclosed.
