UNAM’s Espacio Escultórico Celebrates 41 Years of Art and Reflection

On 23 April 2023, the Espacio Escultórico at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) marked its 41st anniversary. Located in the university’s Centro Cultural Universitario, this iconic site is a celebration of art, nature, and cosmic inspiration, offering a unique space for meditation and appreciation.

A Vision of Collective Art Inaugurated on 23 April 1979, the Espacio Escultórico was created by six renowned Mexican artists: Federico Silva, Helen Escobedo, Manuel Felguérez, Matías Goeritz, Hersúa, and Sebastián. Their goal was to create art for everyone, a public project that would stand the test of time.

The artists stated:

“If none of our individual works survive us, the Espacio Escultórico will endure as one of the most important collective public art projects in recent years.”

This circular space draws inspiration from pre-Hispanic depictions of the cosmos, blending tradition and modern creativity.

A Unique Design Inspired by the Cosmos

The Espacio Escultórico is a masterpiece of geometric and cosmic symbolism. It consists of:

A circular platform, representing the universe, inviting visitors to reflect and connect with their surroundings.
64 modular triangles, each 9 by 3 metres and 4 metres tall, arranged in a ring to create a stunning visual effect.
Its full grandeur can only be appreciated from an aerial view. As Louise Noelle Gras Gas, an academic and expert on urban art, explains:
“It’s an important piece that cannot be captured in a ground-level photograph. Its true perspective requires an aerial view.”

A New Chapter in Mexican Art

Supported by UNAM’s rector at the time, Guillermo Soberón Acevedo, the Espacio Escultórico symbolised a shift in Mexican art. Moving beyond the muralist movement, it became a space for creative collaboration and innovation. During his tenure, the rector also oversaw the opening of the Sala Nezahualcóyotl, home to the UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra, cementing his legacy as a champion of the arts.

The Espacio Escultórico reflects the university’s mission to integrate art and education, inviting renowned artists to leave their mark on its cultural landscape.

A Lasting Legacy

Forty-one years on, the Espacio Escultórico remains a beacon of creativity and connection. By blending pre-Hispanic traditions with modern design, it symbolises the timeless relationship between art, nature, and humanity.

Visiting this extraordinary site offers a rare opportunity to experience art and nature in harmony. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful escape, the Espacio Escultórico is a must-see landmark in Mexico City.
